REASONS PEOPLE FAIL IN NETWORK MARKETING | PART 5
Another Reason for Failure in Network Marketing is Looking Too Closely at the Top-Earners in your Company and/or Letting the Success of Others Discourage You
It was Shakespeare who said, “To thine own self be true.” It’s good advice.
EVENTS ARE FULL OF BAD ASSUMPTIONS
One thing that ALL network marketing companies do is promote what they call “events.” These “events” are all the same. You go (often at considerable expense) and sit and watch the top-earners in the company be rewarded on the stage. Then you’re told that YOU can be on-stage at the next event.
These top-earners are then given the microphone in order to make a speech. They come out one at a time and tell their “stories” in order to demonstrate that “if they can do it, so can you.”
Now, I’m not knocking this. I am simply stating what happens. As noted in another post, some things that motivate some people (like world travel), may not motivate others. The assumption is that we are all motivated by the same things, and I believe that is a bad assumption.
I have attended a number of these events and have never been impressed by these top-earner stories. I am happy that they have been successful, but it doesn’t mean their story can be mine.
MY UPLINE SPONSOR IS REAL, NO NEED FOR HYPE
I have a great relationship with my upline sponsor. He is not only a mentor but also a very respected friend. He is an excellent trainer and encourager.
Even though I know his story, he rarely shares it. We have many new recruits coming into our company and many meet my sponsor. He encourages them, trains them, and does all he can to be available to them. He NEVER employs any pressure of hype.
He’s open and available. Try THAT with most top-earners in other companies!
I believe that the reason he rarely tells his story is because he knows it’s unique to him. No one else can copy it or live it.
In fact, if anyone wants to hear his story, he can point them to a book that contains it. It is, however, a very inspiring story and that, in and of itself, is valuable.
YOUR STORY IS VALUABLE?
In my opinion it is of little business value to hear A TOP-EARNER’S business success story from the stage. You may feel differently. That’s ok. These stories can be informative and may spark an idea or two for you, but overall, they don’t bring a lot of usable information to the table. And that is what I want … USABLE information.
However, when you are sitting with a prospective customer, THEN your personal story of how the products or services your company provides has real significance.
I enjoy sharing the story of how the products my company makes have changed my life. I keep the story relatively short (3 minutes or so) and typically the person I am talking to wants more info.
I have discovered that most people, especially those above 40, are quite interested in maintaining optimal health. If I can tell them my story of getting and remaining healthy, they usually want to learn more.
As noted earlier, my company promotes a “no pressure” approach. We are encouraged to say, “I am happy to share some information with you so you can do your own research and if this isn’t for you, that’s ok.”
Looking at top-earners on stage and wishing I could be where they are isn’t for me. I don’t do it, nor do I recommend that you do it.
YOUR GETTING ONLY PART OF THE STORY
You see, their stories are ALMOST ALWAYS only part of the story. They rarely tell you THE INSIDE of the story. The details of the whole story are held back. Why? Because they know that if they told you about how challenging it was, you’d be more likely to quit.
Their stories often make it sound soooo easy. Ba-low-nee!
Building ANY business is NOT easy. I have built a fairly successful small service business. While it was (and is) rewarding, it wasn’t easy. It has taken daily effort to get it and keep it profitable.
The goal of these top-earners (while on the stage) is to make it sound and seem easy. Again, building ANY type of business isn’t easy. That doesn’t mean it is hard, it just means it is not always easy.
But the entrepreneurial mindset is one that understands that the results on the backside are caused by the effort on the frontside.
The approach my company teaches is more natural, productive and even fun.
TWO TYPES OF TOP-EARNERS
There are ONLY two types of top-earners. Allow me to tell you about them and how they REALLY got there.
The 2 types of top-earners are:
1. People with tremendous established influence
2. People who are willing to work incredibly hard and not let ANYTHING deter them.
First the influencers.
These are people that have built a realm of influence over the years. They may be successful businesspeople, well known in a city or a community, among certain civil organizations, churches and so on. These folks are very well respected and are kind of like E. F. Hutton; when they talk, people listen.
All they really have to do to build a network marketing business is tell everyone that they have joined one. That’s all it takes for people to sign-up too. Their influence leads to people joining their NM team.
They tend to rocket to the top-earner position because of their tremendous influence. Those that join under them, however, typically don’t enjoy the same success because they haven’t built that level of influence.
Now, the second group.
The second group that rise to the top are those individuals that truly work the business. They set a goal and do not allow anything or anyone to discourage them. They want success and they are willing to work as long and as hard as they have to in order to achieve it.
They learn how to prospect effectively. They also learn marketing strategies. While many people around them quit, they do not. They view their business as the only vehicle that will get them to their goals.
They understand that their results are always in line with their efforts. So, they put out the effort and those that do, enjoy the positive results.
So, now you know the two types of top-earners and how they got there.
LET'S THINK ABOUT YOU
Here’s the deal: More than likely, you don’t wield a lot of influence, otherwise you likely wouldn’t be reading this post. So, for you to have success you are going to have to dig your heals in and get to work.
If you are determined enough, you will make it.
Accept who you are (to thine own self be true) and get to work learning to build YOUR business and go build it.
Don’t let the success of others be a concern for you. Don’t focus on them or even think about them (trust me, they are not thinking about you). As far as YOUR business is concerned, they simply don’t matter.
Don’t be overly impressed with them. Be happy for them but remember, you only know the part of their story that they want you to know. Trust me, there’s more to it than they are willing to share.
You bring to the table a completely different set of circumstances and skills. You aren’t them nor do you want to be.
